This is a VERY rare original 1917-1918 issue Livens Projector 100-cap blasting machine for the 8" Livens Chemical Gas Projector. These machines were manufactured for the US Government by the Atlas Powder Company, formerly of the DuPont conglomerate. The machine has a brass plated original serial numbered data plate, identifying the Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland, which was the home of the US Army Chemical Weapons Service (CWS) during the winter of 1917-1918 in WWI.
The machine is a heavy duty 100 cap capacity blasting machine built to government specifications. It retains over 98% of the original OD green paint on the body and handle. It is totally functional and the handle and dynamo operates smoothly throughout its range. Both captive bronze wing nuts are present and without defect. None of the screws have been turned since the machine was built nearly 100 years ago.
These machines are exceptionally difficult to find in any condition. Finding one in mint and unissued condition is nearly impossible. The only flaws is some very slight freckling and tarnish to the brass data plate. There is some slight cracking to the leather handle (it is not recommended to be used for lifting the device). The machine has a three digit serial number in the 5XX range.
This is an image taken of an artist's rendition from a Japanese military intelligence manual dated 1938 that details the component parts of the Livens Projector system. This is a photo of the Livens being loaded, note the blasting machine at the far left of the photo. This is a view of the Livens being fired by a soldier using a blasting machine at the right side. The Japanese were anticipating the possible use of chemical warfare by the US just prior to WWII, however the Livens Projectors were not used, having been essentially replaced by the 4.2 inch chemical mortar in the mid-1930s.
The blasting machine measures 14 inches (16 inches, including the handle in the down position) by 6-1/2 inches wide by 8-1/4 inches deep. All parts are oak wood, or non-sparking metal (bronze, brass). This is a view from the right side and one from the left side.
Offered at $799.99
This is the officer's Mills belt, pistol suspension and dual magazine pouch used by Major G. Van Deusen (USMA 4783 - Class of 1909) while he was commanding officer of the 105th Field Signal Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, AEF during WWI. His name is in faded inked block letters on the back inside of the belt as "G. VAN DEUSEN".
The belt is well maker marked on the metal adjusters with the 1901, 1905, and 1907 patent dates, and the inside of the R. H. LONG maker marked magazine pouch. The pouch is dated 7-18, the belt is dated MAR 18 on the pistol hanger canvas.
The spoon and wreath style buckle has separately applied U.S. letters.
The condition is very good to near excellent. There are red stains (probably blood, not his) inside and out.

USTA-002 WWII Ordnance Experimental, Inert, and Dummy Rounds |
This is a hard to find selection of small to
large caliber INERT Testing Ordnance. These dummy rounds are completely inert and incapable of being made to function as anything other than testing equipment for the various weapons and weapon systems that they were designed to fit. The blue tip rounds are training dummy rounds. The ones marked "EXPERIMENTAL" were designed to test variations in crimps, projectile or shell casing behavior in the specific weapon they were designed to fit. All primer cups have dummy inserts or recessed and can not be made or modified to fire. An example of the 30mm primer cup is shown here. There are several "solid" rounds used to test automatic feed systems, chamber tolerances, headspace and similar non-firing applications. There are several custom-made one-off rounds (inert) that were created locally by the ordnance department for specific applications or because of a lack of a manufactured dummy round. Several are one-piece machine milled, some are partially plastic with metal at the stress points, and similar modifications. This lot has one more small caliber dummy rifle round that is not shown. The condition is excellent to near mint throughout. |
