Civil War Major General Eli Long Union War Hero Lot

This is a extremely rare and desirable Civil War document and original Civil War shoulder board rank insignia and large photograph offering.

This offering consists of a photograph, one Colonel of Cavalry shoulder board, one Brigadier General shoulder board, and one matched pair of Major General shoulder boards.

The albumin photograph is mounted on a pasteboard carrier. The photo measures 5-3/4 by 7-3/4 inches. The carrier measures 10 by 12 inches. There is a significant crack in the photo at the lower edge (content is not effected), and a chunk missing from the lower left corner and cracks along the edge. This is a close-up of MG Long from the photo. This is a view of the back of the carrier.

The Colonel board shows some significant wear and some broken strands of the gold bullion thread border and minor wear to the yellow wool background and moderate wear to the back side. It measures 4-1/8 by 1-5/8 inches. the Brigadier General shoulder board measures 4-1/4 by 1-3/4. There is some minor wear to the black silk background near the area of the star. The Major General shoulder boards are in near excellent condition, with some minor to moderate tarnish on the bullion. The black velvet background on both is complete and intact. This is a view of the back sides of all pieces.

Original documents include his appointment to Captain of the Corps of Cadets of the Kentucky Military Institute by the Governor of Kentucky, Lazarus W. Powell, dated 22nd June, 1855.  It measures 12 by 14 inches and has the original embossed yellow seal. This is a close-up of the text of the document.

The next document is of significant historical significance in several respects.  It is the April 18th, 1865 appointment to Brigadier General of Volunteers executed by President Andrew Johnson only 3 days after the assassination of President Lincoln. The signature is an ORIGINAL quill pen signed by the president, which is VERY unusual, as it was so very soon after the death of Lincoln (he was not yet laying in state at the time of the signing). Further, Andrew Johnson was known for using a hand stamp of his signature from very early in his presidency. This is a VERY rare and desirable  document both from a historical sense and especially from this early in his presidency. The Edwin Stanton signature is also original.  This document shows some damage and reddish stains below the signature blocks that do not impact content.  This is a close-up of the text detail showing the original signatures of both Stanton and Johnson. This is a close-up of the seal and entry into the record notation.

There are four additional brevet promotion documents, all with Andrew Johnson stamped signatures. They are for the ranks of Major, Brigadier General, Major General of the US Army and Major General of the US Volunteers in Service to the United States. Each is printed on vellum and measures 15-1/2 by 19 inches.

The brevet to Major is dated effective the 7th of October, 1862 for "gallant and meritorious services at the Battle of Farmington, Tennessee" and executed by President Johnson on the 3rd of August, 1866. This is a close-up of the text detail showing the stamps of both Stanton and Johnson. This is a close-up of the seal and entry into the record notation.

The brevet to Brigadier General is dated effective 13th March, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the Battle and Capture of Selma, Alabama" and executed by President Johnson on the 17th of July, 1866.  This is a close-up of the text detail showing the ORIGINAL Stanton signature and Johnson stamp. This is a close-up of the seal and entry into the record notation.

The brevet to Major General (U.S. Army) is dated effective 13th March, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in the field during the War" and executed by President Johnson on the 27th of July, 1866.  This is a close-up of the text detail showing ORIGINAL Stanton signature and Johnson stamp. This is a close-up of the seal and entry into the record notation.

The brevet to Major General (U.S. Volunteers) is dated effective 13th March, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in action" and executed by President Johnson on the 7th of April, 1866.  This is a close-up of the text detail showing the stamps of both Stanton and Johnson. This is a close-up of the seal and entry into the record notation.

Included with this lot is a massive 3 inch thick stack of an extensive historical background detail from the National Archives, and extensive research by noted Civil War historian S. L. Zerbe. The documentation is far to massive to list, but includes unit histories and actions involving Eli Long, and a lot of historical context of Eli Long of a biographical nature, as well as copies of wartime documents, etc.  There are literally hundreds of pages of printed matter and a set of microfiche from the archives, and a number of pieces of additional related supporting documentation.

President Garfield Assassination Framed Lot

This is a extremely rare and most unusual offering.

This is a ready-to-display shadow boxed framed comprising an original period labeled and identified tile from the exact spot on the floor of Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station where President Garfield was assassinated in 1881.  Also included is an original signature clip of the assassin, Charles J. Guiteau.  Copies of a newspaper account and a ticket from the Obsequies at the Capitol and a brief biographical description complete the lot.

The tile is hexagonal, and was one of several that was recovered from the site when the floor was replaced after the assassination.  This one is numbered "2 c" and has a label affixed identifying the presenter R. T. Getchell.  The tile measures 3 by 6 inches.  It is identical in all respects to the tiles that were donated to the Smithsonian Institute in 1909 by James Garfield, the son of the Late President.  This is a Smithsonian photograph of those tiles for comparison purposes.

The frame measures 14 by 18 inches and is ready to display.

President Garfield Funeral Obsequies Framed Lot

This is a extremely rare and most unusual offering.

This is a ready-to-display shadow boxed framed comprising an original period labeled and identified funeral obsequies from the catafalque funerary of President Garfield who was assassinated in 1881.

There was a seven member committee that was responsible for the distribution of the relics removed from the catafalque. The relics are identified by the location of each piece.  Included in this very rare lot are:

W. H. Woolworth was a carriage maker of the mid to late 19th century.

The lot is in the 12-3/4 by 15-3/4 inch original frame. These are close-up views of the relics and detail images of the top and bottom portions of the lot. This is a view of the wooden back.  There is some damage from humidity and foxing from age apparent.  The gilt edge frame also shows moderate to heavy wear and some damage from the passage of time.

This is a VERY rare lot.  Relics of this qualtity and quantity are seldom encountered outside of state museums and the close associates or family member's estates.

19th Century Ivory Handle Nutcracker Set in Fitted Case

This is an unusually well-crafted set of nutcrackers featuring real ivory handles.

The set was sold by the noted high-end jeweler and timepiece distributor Connell of London.  The case is marked in gilt lettering of red silk with CONNELL 83. CHEAPSIDE. E.C. SUCCESSOR TO R. BROOK & SON 1&2. POULTRY which would date it to the middle of the latter part of the 19th century.  The case is leather covered wood and extremely well-made and fitted precisely to the set of four nutcrackers.

None of the pieces are marked with either content or maker marks.  They are exceptionally well crafted and precision assembled.  The ivory grips are approximately 2-3/4 inches long and 1/2 inch in diameter at the widest portion.  One of the handles as a thin hairline crack from age.  All operate smoothly.

The case measures 7 by 8-3/4 inches and it is slightly over an inch thick and domed to accommodate the width of the pieces it contains.  It is covered with pebble grained black leather with gilt trim. There is some routine wear from years of long storage, and there is a crack on the bottom side of the case in the leather from a seam in the wood.

The instruments are in near excellent and completely serviceable condition, the only exception to perfection is the one crack mentioned above.  Each nutcracker measures 6 inches long and just over 11-1/2 inches when opened fully.

These are views of the entire set and case, and one of the nutcrackers fully extended, front and rear.

Franz von Lenbach Oil Painting "Kaiser Wilhelm I"

This is a very unusual offering.

The painting is a rendition of Kaiser Wilhelm I -- also known as "Wilhelm the Great" -- (1797-1888) is by the noted Bavarian artist Franz von Lenbach (1836-1904).  It is an oil painting on canvas, depicting the Kaiser seated, wearing only the Order of the Pour Le Mérite with Oak Leaves (prior to1866 after which he wore the Grand Order of the PLM) and the ribbon of the Iron Cross 1814. It measures 77cm by 107cm (30-1/2 by 42 inches).

This painting was acquired at the end of WWI by a member of the Occupation Army of the American Expeditionary Force from a German civilian following the end of the Great War. The oral history from the grandchildren of the man that bought the painting was that it was rescued by a German soldier from a burning building being shelled during a torrential rainstorm. He didn't have much time and little consideration for the art, simply cutting the painting from the frame with a bayonet to save the image of the Kaiser. This is evidenced by the fairly sharp edges of the margins and only the "...bach" portion of the artist's signature at the lower left remaining.  It appears approximately 2-1/2 inches of the edges were left in the frame.

It has been extensively researched to determine if it was a plundered artwork in the Lost Art and several museum databases. It is apparent that this painting predates the plundering of artworks by a number of years, and no records of this particular artwork exist on any of the lists of stolen artworks.  The painting shows a significant amount of moderate water damage and some holes and general wear, and not of any particular note other than its historical figure content, it is highly unlikely that it was anything other than a simple private purchase by a doughboy at the end of WWI.

The painting is intriguing in that it depicts the Kaiser in earlier years, wearing a formal evening uniform and a bare minimum of decorations, in stark contrast to the later years of the empire when he had a beard with much more pronounced jowls and a plethora of awards and decorations.  He appears to be about 63-67 years old in this rendition, about the time of his ascendancy to the throne of Prussia in 1861 (evidenced by the PLM) but prior to being proclaimed Emperor of Germany in 1871.

Offered at $25,000.00

Christian Myer Ross Oil Painting "Old Woman with Fur Hat"

This is a very unusual offering.

The painting "Alte Dame mit Pelzkappe" (Old Woman with Fur Hat) is by Norwegian artist Christian Meyer Ross (1824-1904).  It is oil painting rendered in the parlor art form.  It measures 59cm by 69cm (23-1/2 by 27-1/4 inches).

This painting was acquired at the second sale of the Brussels, Belgium auction at the J&A Le Roy Brothers Art Gallery in April, 1924.  The original admission ticket and a handwritten annotation by Professor Doctor Gerdy Troost -- Adolf Hitler's personal secretary -- is on the back of the painting.  The painting was given as a present to her by Adolf Hitler in the early 1930s.

It has been extensively researched to determine if it was a plundered artwork by three separate sources and all are of the opinion that this painting predates the plundering of artworks by a number of years, and no records of this particular artwork exist on any of the lists of stolen artworks.  As this was painted by a relatively insignificant artist at the time, and not of any particular note other than its intrinsic appeal, it is highly unlikely that it was anything other than a simple private purchase from the art gallery in a neutral country.

The painting is indicated on Gerdy Troost's personal inventory with the annotation indicating it was a gift from Hitler. There is extensive documentation with this artwork documenting the chain of possession and transfers of custody from the initial acquisition in 1924 to the present.  Additionally, there is biographical detail about the artist and his works, and a long and detailed statement regarding the research to determine it is not a stolen artwork.  A list of the documents is here.  The ticket and Troost annotation are shown here.  The entire documentation package is bound with a cover sheet and is included with the artwork.

Offered at $20,000.00

James Tayleur 1775 Solid Silver Cased Shoe Buckle Set

This is a very scarce cased set of solid silver court shoe buckles by the English silversmith James Tayleur. Both buckles have his distinctive I•T maker mark and lion silver content touchmark. This mark is identical to the one shown and identified as the James Tayleur registered mark in Miller's Silver & Sheffield Plate Marks: Including a Guide to Makers & Styles By John Bly.

These buckles are typical of the 1780-1785 period and the pitchfork form dates around 1782.

John Tayleur, mark of 1775, (Grimwade Nr 1707) which is very similar. Although recorded mainly as a plate worker , he was styled as a bucklemaker in 1779. He was still active in 1780, when he moved premises to Red Lyon Street and Heal records him as active in 1784.

The buckles are very ornate, featuring 33 multifaceted balls in a finely scalloped frame with bead borders, shown in this close-up of the front.  The buckle portion is finely worked iron with mercury bluing (more than 90% of the blue remains), visible on the back.  Each buckle measures 2 by 3 inches and is uniformly vaulted in a smooth curve to conform to a court shoe, as shown here.

There is an old notation that indicates the maker as James Tookey, which is apparently a spurious identification based on the touchmarks.

The 4 by 5 by 2-1/2 inch vaulted silk lined wooden case was custom made for this set of buckles.  It is shown from the top front and rear here.

Chinese High Leader District Seal

This is very large and ornate soapstone seal. It is profusely covered on all four sides with Chinese ideograms.  The chop on the bottom is intact and has not been sanded down or removed.  The lettering style appears to be the Mou style that was popular during the Han Dynasty, although this seal does not appear to be nearly that old.  The chop is rendered in a high relief Jiudie (nine folded) script.

This is a massive piece measuring 11 inches high from the base to the top of the elaborately carved Chinese dog with a captive ball rattle carved inside the mouth.  There are three smaller Chinese dogs surrounding the large central dog figure.  The chop measures 11cm (4-5/8 inches) square.  It weighs approximately 15 pounds.

The back side from the top is visible here.

The front is shown by clicking the thumbnail above. These are the Right -- Rear -- Left sides.

Vincent van Gogh "Sunflowers" Early 20th Century Litho Print on Board

This is one of the series of sunflower paintings executed by Vincent van Gogh in Arles in 1888-1889.  This particular print is of the one currently in the Amsterdam Museum (JH 1667; F 458) and was originally painted in January 1889.  The original can be seen at the Amsterdam Museum website here.

This print was part of the collection of the Malsheim art school in Gau Baden prior to WWII.  It has two handstamps identifying the location and district, as well as the original source, H. Berner an art dealer in Strassburg on the back.  It has a penciled notation "Malsheim" in German script at the top.

The textured litho print is in its original frame.  It measures 9-1/4 by 11-3/4 inches overall.

The condition is very good to near excellent.  There are three small dings on the face, visible in the images as white spots.

This is a rare opportunity to own a very early rendition of this famed artwork.  At one time in the early 2000s, one of the van Gogh Sunflower series commanded the highest price ever paid at auction for a painting: 5 million dollars.

William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody Wild West Show Signed Letter, Photograph and Original Lillian Smith Artwork Framed Lot
An Original and Authentic 1886 William F "Buffalo Bill" Cody Double Signed Letter Lillian Smith Girl Sharpshooter Framed Lot

This is a truly stunning lot. It is framed and ready to hang in your den as a centerpiece of conversation and admiration. This letter is especially attractive since it is completely handwritten and has BOTH the Buffalo Bill (in the body of the text) and W.F. Cody signature at the end. It is also very early in the career of the Wild West Show (it having started in 1883).

There are a number of pieces shown, each will be described below. A little background is in order for those unfamiliar with Lillian Smith. She was a young (15 years old) California girl brought into the Wild West Show. She remained a fixture with the show -- along with the crack shot Annie Oakley (who allegedly took 5 years off her own age to appear younger when Lillian Smith joined the show!) She would later gain notoriety as the "Princess Wenona of the Sioux" (also seen Winona Vonohl). She was criticized for dying her skin to resemble an Indian while performing with Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show in the early 1900s, and later as a sideshow attraction at the 101 Ranch.

There was no denial about her singular ability to shoot, however.

The letter from Buffalo Bill is to commission a poster for the upcoming two seasons of the Wild West Show, (just prior to the 1887 Wild West Show tour of England). The text of the letter is below (periods, punctuation, and spelling are shown as written):

Denver. Apr. 7th .86
A. Hoell & Co
Baltimore
Md.

By this mail. I send you a photograph of. Miss Lillian Smith. the Champion Girl Shot. I wish you would make a lithograph pf her as soon as pos-sible. She is to be a member of the Wild West for the next two years. and we want to advertise her all we can. She is a wonderful Shot. Put on the litho.

Miss. Lillian. Smith

The California Girl Shot With Buffalo Bills. Wild West.

Send them along woth our other lithographs when ready. I will leave it all to your judgement how to get them up.

Yours Very Truly

W.F. Cody

Page 1 Close-up

Page 2 Close-up

The letter is written on Hamilton embossed lined stationery. It has been initialed on both sheets as shown. There are creases from where the letter was folded twice for mailing. The stationery measures 6 by 9 inches. A close-up of the signature block is shown here.

At the top of the frame is a photograph of Miss Lillian Smith between two of her World Championship targets. One is labeled "No. 4. 20 shots 1 minute 20 seconds Score 96" The other target is also labeled, but virtually unreadable. It is 10 shots, all but one in the bull's eye. This photograph measures 12 by 6-1/2 inches. This photo is in near excellent condition.

The center of the frame has an original photograph of Buffalo Bill in profile, wearing his famed fringed buckskins. The photograph is in near excellent condition.

The bottom of the frame has the photograph of Lillian Smith that was used for the top photograph, and for the artwork of the proposed lithograph. It is in near excellent, slightly faded to sepia condition. It measures 5-1/2 by 8 inches.

To the left of that photograph is an original concept sketch of the poster. Note the error in the spelling of Lillian Smith's name as "Lilian" This may be the only reason this piece of art survived, as it was retained with the original letter and not sent to Buffalo Bill for approval. The sketch has some damage. There is a sharp crease that has cracked at the top quarter of the page. There are a couple of other more minor tears and scars. There is some yellowing and fading from age. It measures 7-3/4 by 11 inches.

The frame measures 25-1/2 by 34-1/2 inches. It is in near excellent condition, with some very minor wear to the edges. It was professionally framed in Prescott, AZ within the last 20 years. All of the pieces are floated under double mats. The glass is UV resistant plastic.
