General Marquis de Lafayette Signed Document

This is a very interesting note from General Lafayette referencing passage for a courier from the US to England.   Lafayette wrote his name in the greeting and further initialed the end of the document.

The text reads: "Gnl. Lafayette / Best Compliments. Wait on Mr. Robin (a correction in spelling apparent) and send him two tickets for the seance of Friday.  He will take the liberty to hand (a correction apparent) him with some letters for England on tomorrow evening. (Initials) Friday Morn

The term "seance" is an archaic French word for "seats" and in common usage at the time.  The corrections are in Lafayette's hand.  This is a close-up of the handwritten text.

Also included in this lot is a 19th century engraving of Lafayette with a facsimile signature.  There is some light to moderate foxing.  This will nicely compliment the letter in a properly framed and conserved presentation.

Offered at $4,999.99

Compte Garet Signed Document to First French President Louis Napoleon

This is a very interesting letter from Count Garet to the Louis Napoleon III, France's first elected president dated within a month of his election in 1849.  This is a close-up of the handwritten text (Page 1 -- Page 2). Full size document is shown by clicking the thumbnails below.

The letter is written on a center fold single sheet, the writing on the front and back of the first page.  The back and last interior page are blank.  The letter was folded in quarters for mailing or delivery.  It measures 16 inches wide unfolded, and 8 inches wide as shown below.  It is 10-3/8 inches top to bottom.

The content is being translated, we will post it as soon as possible.

There is some light foxing and a bit of ink fading to sepia.  There are a couple on small scars from a wax seal broken when it was initially opened.

Offered at $199.99

Rare WWII French Resistance FFI Signed History

An ORIGINAL Résistance.... et Contre-attaques en Uniforme (French Resistance and Counter-Attack in Uniform) June 1940 - August 1944 Unit History.

This is a collection of documents collected, collated and bound by a career military officer of the French military, General Georges Malraison, who served as commanding officer of a number of French FFI and military resistance units throughout the occupation of France, including the 5th Bureau, the 4th demi-brigade of Chasseurs, and other positions of authority.  This book covers the time from the initial German invasion of France to the liberation of Paris, from when he was a major through the rank of colonel.

There is a long hand-written dedication to a fellow soldier named "Murphy" -- who was involved with the invasion of North Africa --at the front of the book, the book being signed and dedicated shortly after it was published in Potsdam on the occasion of the French Independence Day, (14) July, 1948.  The table of contents lists the documents contained in the book.  Each of the documents is formatted exactly as the original orders, to include signature blocks, routing, classification, and all other aspects.  Most of the documents are hand-signed by Colonel Malraison in blue quill pen, as shown in a representative example below.  The introduction, written in the Spring of 1948 in Potsdam is also signed.  There are at least 20 original signatures throughout the book in the appropriate places above the signature blocks.  There are some penned corrections and annotations by the author where the printing was unclear or obscure.

Th e content is entirely in French. It gives a very detailed insider's view of the French resistance in Part One (June 1940 to June 1942) (14 documents).  Part Two (July 1942-August 1944) (16 documents) detail elements of the French counter-attack that (with the aid of the Allies) eventually ousted the Germans from French soil.

This is an invaluable reference if you are a historian of the French participation in World War II.  This document is incredibly rare, and very likely unique, given the profusely signed and dedicated content.

The condition is near very good, as shown.  This book is a little fragile, it requires some moderate care in handling due to the use of high-acid content post-war paper.  There is some uniform browning throughout, however the pages are still flexible.  There is some wear to the covers at the edges and corners.  There is a hand stamp at the upper left reading "Le General Georges Malraison Chef de la Mission Militaire Francais de Liaison pres le Commandant en Chef des Forces Sovietques(? not clear) en Allemande"  There is very old cellophane tape around the page with the dedication.

It measures 8-1/4 x 11-1/2 inches.
