This is a rare Grand Cross of the Iron Cross 1870.
The Iron Cross was renewed on July 19, 1870 for the Franco-Prussian War. Nine men received the 1870 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross for service during that war. Seven Grand Crosses were awarded on March 22, 1871, to:
Kaiser Wilhelm I received the Grand Cross on June 16, 1871 and Friedrich Franz II, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin received it on December 4, 1871. The Kaiser was supreme commander of the Prussian Army, and Moltke was Chief of the General Staff. The others were senior combat commanders of the Prussian Army (Crown Prince Albert initially commanded the Saxon Army as a corps under a Prussian field army, but later took command of a combined Prussian/Saxon field army)
It measures 63mm square across the arms. It is 938 Silver content marked and has a JG u. S. maker mark at the top arm on the back side. The loop has no content or maker marks apparent. The ribbon is 45cm long and 63mm wide. There is tarnish on the silver and some minor to light wear of the paint.

This is a very well-documented KCIC with 14-1/2 Inch Neck
Ribbon.
The medal measures 47mm across the arms. Here is a overall views of the front and the back. There is very minor tarnish from routine wear, visible in this close-up of the 1939 date and swastika area of the front. This is a view of the 1813 date. This is a close-up of the maker and silver content marks on both the suspension loop and cross. The maker is indicated as L/26, (Klein & Quenzer, Oberstein) and 900. The loop is marked 800. The sewn ribbon has 8 inch narrow neck ties. This KCIC was the one awarded to Feldwebel Hermann Schramm on the occasion of his 24th victory in 1941. He later ran his record to 42 before he was killed in action when his parachute failed to open in 1943. These are the documents included with this lot. The photostats (white on black) are original 1930s period documents with stamps and postmarks as shown. The two photo IDs are originals. The death notice is original. The leather wallet is period and contained the original documents shown. The remainder of the documents are post-war copies from various sources documenting Schramm's record.
The condition is as shown, with wear to the black paint and deep tarnish from age and routine wear. |
