WP-003 Mail Pouch Chewing Tobacco Archer Counter Poster Broadside Advertisement |
MAIL POUCH -- The Real Man's Choice Advertisement Broadside Poster. This is an original Early 20th Century period advertisement for this noted brand, owned by the Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company of Wheeling, West Virginia who discovered stogie clippings could be flavored and sold in bags as chewing tobacco in the late 19th century. The artwork depicts an English archer in full draw with the legend STRONG ARMS AND STEADY EYES - The invention of firearms made archery a romance of the past. Famous archers of history devoted their entire lives, from early childhood, to constant practice and physical training. No modern man could duplicate their feats of skill and strength." While that may have been true when the poster was printed, archery is still a very competitive sport and the archers far more accurate than those of the past. For this reason alone, it is an interesting study in historical perspectives of the time. The back of the broadside is shown here, with parts of the stand-up remaining. The condition is generally very good, with some wear to the edges and slight corner damage, and bumps as shown. It measures 14 inches wide by 21 inches high. |

WP-007 Prince Albert Tobacco Chief Many Horns Poster Broadside Advertisement |
Prince Albert -- the national joy smoke Pipe Tobacco Advertisement Broadside Poster. This is an original Early 20th Century period advertisement for this noted brand. The artwork appears to have been derived from another artist, with the pipe moved to make it more prominent in the advertisement -- not surprising considering the context. The Catlinite pipe is more like the one that Man-Packs-Eagle carried as opposed to the tomahawk pipe usually seen with artworks of Many Horns. The artwork depicts Chief Many Horns. Many Horns (“He Ota”) was a Dakota Sioux Cut Head band chief of the Upper Yanktonais, who roamed in the late 1870s the upper Missouri and Milk River region in Montana. There is a deep crease and some significant damage of the broadside as shown here and signs of early attempts at repair here. The condition is generally fair to good, with moderate wear to the edges and damage as shown. It measures 19-1/2 inches wide by 25 inches high in the frame. |
